geography

Gillarens lies at 677  m above sea level. M. , three and a half kilometers south of Rue and 14 kilometers southwest of the district capital Romont (as the crow flies). The village extends on the eastern slope of the Broye in a panoramic location around 100 m above the valley floor, in the Molasse hill country of the southwest Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 2.0 km². The area extended from the Broye eastward over the wide valley floor and the gently sloping slope of Gillarens to the height of Chapelle (up to 760  m above sea level ).

population

With 177 inhabitants (2000), Gillarens was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Since 1950 (272 inhabitants) the municipality has recorded a population decrease of around 35% due to strong emigration. Some farm settlements and individual farms belong to Gillarens.

economy

Gillarens was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . A mill used to be operated on the Broye. Even today, dairy farming , animal husbandry and, to a lesser extent, arable farming play an important role in the income structure of the population. Some other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Since 1993 Gillarens has been the location of a home for the handicapped of the Eben-Ezer Foundation. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Oron region.

traffic

The village is located off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from Oron-la-Ville . Gillarens itself has no connection to the public transport network. The bus line of the Transports publics Fribourgeois , which runs from Romont via Ursy and Oron-la-Ville to Palézieux-Gare , stops at an intersection of Broyetalstrasse around 700 m from the town center.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century under the name of Gislerens . The spellings Gislarens (1225) and Gillerens (1302) appeared later . The current name of Gillarens has been attested since 1273. The place name is derived from the Germanic personal name Giselher ( Old High German : Gisilheri or Gisilhari or Gisillar ; later spellings in Burgundy are: Gislar or Gillar and Gisler or Giller ) and means with the suffix -ens as much as "with the descendants / people des Giselher ”.

In the High Middle Ages, Gillarens was owned by the Saint-Maurice Abbey , which gave the settlement and its surrounding area to the Haut-Crêt Abbey around 1150 . When the Bernese conquered Vaud in 1536, the village came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Vogtei Rue. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Gillarens belonged to the Rue district during the Helvetic and the following period and was incorporated into the Glâne district in 1848. With effect from January 1, 2001, Gillarens was incorporated into Rue . In church matters, Gillarens belongs to the parish of Promasens.
