geography

Sommentier lies at 906  m above sea level. M. , two and a half kilometers southwest of Vuisternens-devant-Romont and 6.5 km south of the district capital Romont (beeline). The farming village extends in a panoramic position on the northern slope of the Bois du Chanex forest , above the valley of the Gotto ( called Fochaux in the lower reaches ), a tributary of the Glâne , in the Molasse hill country of the higher Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 3.3 km². The area included the forest hill Bois de Chanex ( 957  m above sea level ), its gently sloping slope to the north and reached in the northwest into the valley of the Gotto .

population

With 255 inhabitants (2002), Sommentier was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Sommentier includes the Chez les Dumas settlement ( 920  m above sea level ) on the north-western slope of the Bois du Chanex as well as several farm settlements and individual farms.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Sommentier was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, the dairy industry and cattle breeding have an important place in the income structure of the population. Some other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Romont and Bulle regions.

traffic

The village is away from the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from Vuisternens-devant-Romont . Sommentier has no connection to the public transport network.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1247 under the names Somentier and Summentier . The place name is probably derived from the old French word som (mountain peak). The Sommentier area was part of the Vuisternens-devant-Romont domain. When the Bernese conquered Vaud in 1536, the village came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Bailiwick of Romont. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Sommentier belonged to the Romont district during the Helvetic and the following time and was incorporated into the Glâne district in 1848. Sommentier was previously dependent on the parish of Vuisternens-devant-Romont; today it is an independent parish.

As part of the community mergers supported by the canton of Friborg since 2000, Sommentier was incorporated into Vuisternens-devant-Romont with Lieffrens , La Magne , Les Ecasseys , La Joux , Villariaz and Estévenens with effect from January 1, 2003 .
