Eschiens is a town and formerly an independent political municipality in the Glane district of the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . On March 1, 1969, Eschiens was incorporated into Ecublens (FR) .

geography

Eschiens is located at 603  m above sea level. M. , seven kilometers south of Moudon (as the crow flies). The village extends slightly higher on the western slope of the Broye valley , in the wide valley basin of the Haute-Broye at the foot of the Le Signal forest heights , in the southwestern Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 1.3 km². The area was bordered in the east by the Broye, in the west and north by its left side stream Parimbot and reached from the flat valley floor to the crest north of Auboranges (up to 690  m above sea level ).

population

With around 66 inhabitants (1960), Eschiens was one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Some individual farms also belonged to Eschiens.

economy

Eschiens still lives today from agriculture , especially from dairy farming and cattle breeding as well as from agriculture (tobacco and grain).

traffic

The village is away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from Ecublens . Eschiens has no direct connection to the public transport network. On August 25, 1876, the railway line from Moudon to Palézieux-Gare with a station in Ecublens was put into operation. This is about 1 km from the center of Eschiens.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1245 under the current name of Eschiens . Later, the names Echichens (1274) and Eschyens (1330) appeared. The etymology of the place name is not clear. Eschiens probably goes back to the Burgundian personal name Scih and means with the suffix -ens as much as with the people of Scih.

In the Middle Ages, Eschiens was on the traffic route through the Broyetal and belonged to the rue Rue , which had been under the sovereignty of Savoy since the 13th century . A noble family d'Eschiens is mentioned in the 13th century. The Haut-Crêt Monastery and the Saint-Maurice Abbey also owned rich estates in the municipality.

When the Bernese conquered Vaud in 1536, Eschiens came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Vogtei Rue. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Rue district during the Helvetic and the following period, before being incorporated into the Glâne district in 1848. Eschiens had shared administration with Ecublens since 1883. With effect from January 1, 1969, the small community was incorporated together with Villangeaux to Ecublens (FR) .
