economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Le Châtelard was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, the dairy industry , cattle breeding and forestry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Romont and Freiburg regions.

traffic

The community is located away from the major thoroughfares on a connecting road from Grangettes over the Gibloux to Sorens . Le Châtelard is connected to the public transport network by a bus from Transports publics Fribourgeois , which runs between Bulle and Romont .

history

The municipality of Le Châtelard was already settled in Roman times. During the High Middle Ages , a fortified castle square was probably located here, as the name of the village suggests. Earlier forms of the name were Chastelard and Chattelard (also Latinized Castellarium supra ). The early local history is largely in the dark.

During the 13th century, Le Châtelard belonged to the county of Gruyères before it came to the House of Savoy in 1273 . In 1449 the village passed to the lords of Montagny and in 1564 it was bought by Freiburg. Le Châtelard assigned this to the Bailiwick of Romont. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Romont district during the Helvetic and the subsequent period and was incorporated into the Glâne district in 1848.

Le Châtelard, Grangettes and Massonnens were to be amalgamated as part of the municipal mergers promoted by the canton since 2000. After the residents of Massonnens rejected a merger in April 2005, the project was temporarily put on hold.

Attractions

The Saint-Bernard-de-Menthon church was built in 1846. Le Châtelard has had its own parish since 1840, previously it belonged to the parish of Grangettes. Some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the village.
