Villariaz ( Friborg Patois Velâryâ ? / I ) is a town and formerly an independent political municipality in the Glane district of the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . On January 1, 2003, Villariaz was incorporated into Vuisternens-devant-Romont together with a number of other communities . Audio file / audio sample

geography

Villariaz is located at 764  m above sea level. M. , one kilometer northeast of Vuisternens-devant-Romont and four kilometers south-southeast of the district capital Romont (beeline). The village extends in the wide hollow between the height of Les Brévires and the range of hills of Mont Gibloux , west of the Neirigue , in the Molasse hills of the Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 3.2 km². The area comprised a section of the basin of the Neiriguetals and the side streams flowing down from Vuisternens-devant-Romont. It reached in the north to the forest heights of Les Brévires (up to 825  m above sea level ) and in the east over the forest of Les Bioles to the slope of Les Verraux (up to 930  m above sea level ), which belongs to the range of hills of the Gibloux.

population

With 344 inhabitants (2002), Villariaz was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Villariaz has several housing estates and some individual farms.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Villariaz was predominantly an agricultural village. A mill used to be operated by the water power of the Neirigue. Today who have dairy industry , the livestock and agriculture an important role in the employment structure of the population. A few other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in an information technology company. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Romont and Bulle regions.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Vuisternens-devant-Romont to Massonnens . Villariaz is connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus line , which runs from Romont to Bulle .

history

The municipality of Villariaz was settled very early, which was confirmed by the discovery of Roman coins. The first written mention of the place took place in 1148 under the name Vilar Roart . Later the names Vilare Rohardi , Villar Rohart (1154), Villarriard (1255) and Villarriat (1668) appeared. The place name goes back to the Germanic personal name Rohard and means village of Rohard .

Since the Middle Ages, Villariaz has been under the rule of Grangettes . When the Bernese conquered Vaud in 1536, the village came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Bailiwick of Romont. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Villariaz belonged to the Romont district during the Helvetic and the following period and was incorporated into the Glâne district in 1848. Villariaz does not have its own church; it belongs to the parish of Vuisternens-devant-Romont.

As part of the municipal mergers funded by the canton of Friborg since 2000, Villariaz was incorporated into Vuisternens-devant-Romont with Lieffrens , Sommentier , La Magne , Les Ecasseys , La Joux and Estévenens with effect from January 1, 2003 .
