La Verrerie is about 11 km west-southwest of Bulle (as the crow flies). The community extends on the undulating highlands in the headwaters of the Mionna , in the extreme southwest of the Freiburg Central Plateau , near the edge of the Alps.
The area of the 13.4 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse plateau north of the upper reaches of the Broye , in the foothills of the Alps. The municipality extends from the Broye valley northward over the gently undulating highlands of the Haute-Veveyse with the headwaters of the Mionna, the Bois de Ban forest ( 932 m above sea level ), the protected moorland La Mosse d'en Bas except for the ridge of Le Crêt, on which at 933 m above sea level. In the far north-east the municipal ban extends into the headwaters of the Neirigue and Sionge . In between lies the Joux à Britse forest ( 880 m above sea level ). In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was in settlements, 15% in forests and woodlands, 78% in agriculture and around 1% was unproductive land.
The scattered settlement community of La Verrerie consists of the following districts:

population
With 1188 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), La Verrerie is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Friborg. 95.2% of the residents speak French, 1.6% speak Portuguese and 1.0% speak German (as of 2000). The population of La Verrerie was 1054 in 1900. After the population had risen to 1143 by 1910, a marked decrease of over 40% to 666 inhabitants was registered by 1970. Since then, the population has increased again, which has intensified especially since the 1990s.
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, La Verrerie was a predominantly agricultural village. During the 19th century, the area was dominated by the Semsales glassworks, which was located in the La Verrerie district. It ceased operations in 1914. Peat used to be cut in the bog areas of Le Crêt.
Even today, livestock and dairy farming play an important role in the income structure of the population. Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in wood processing, cheese production and construction companies. Over the past few decades, La Verrerie has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the regions of Bulle, Oron-la-Ville and Châtel-Saint-Denis .
traffic
The community is very well developed in terms of traffic, although it is away from the major thoroughfares. The next connection to the A12 motorway , which has been open continuously from Bern to Vevey since 1981 and crosses the municipality, is around 6 km from the town center. On July 23, 1903, the railway line from Châtel-Saint-Denis to Bulle was put into operation with a stop at La Verrerie (on the parish of Semsales). The bus line, which runs from Oron-la-Ville to La Verrerie and, with the exception of Progens, serves all of the larger villages and hamlets of the municipality, takes care of the distribution of public transport .
history
The municipality of La Verrerie was already settled in Roman times. In the Middle Ages , the lords of Oron and the castles of Rue owned estates and lands in the area. Later on, part of the property was inherited by the Counts of Gruyères . During the 16th century, all parts came into the possession of Freiburg and were assigned to the Vogtei Rue .
After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), La Verrerie was part of what was then the Rue district during the Helvetic and the following period, before being incorporated into the Veveyse district in 1848. The economic development of the villages was shaped during the 19th century by the glassworks stationed in the La Verrerie district, which was one of the most important glass manufacturers in Switzerland, but ceased operations in 1914.
In the context of the municipal mergers promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the voters of Le Crêt , Grattavache and Progens voted in September 2003 with a majority of around 96% in favor of merging their municipalities. With effect from January 1, 2004, the municipality of La Verrerie was created, which was named after the former glassworks. The municipal administration is located in Le Crêt, the parish is called Le Crêt-Progens.
