geography

Progens is at 873  m above sea level. M. , twelve kilometers west-southwest of Bulle (linear distance ). The village extends in a promising location on a ridge between the upper reaches of Broye in the south and Mionna in the north, in the Molasse hills of the Haute-Veveyse in the southwestern Freiburg Central Plateau , near the northern edge of the Alps. The former municipality area was around 3.8 km². The former parish ground was divided into two parts. The main part comprised the ridge of Progens (up to 900  m above sea level ), bounded by the valley lowlands of the Mionna and the Rogigues (side brook of the Broye). An elongated exclave stretched northeast of the village on both sides of the A12 motorway and reached into the moorland in the catchment area of the Sionge .

population

With 277 inhabitants (2002), Progens was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. The settlement of La Verrerie ( 832  m above sea level ) on the northern edge of the valley of the Canal de Rogigues as well as several farm settlements and individual farms also belonged to the scattered settlement community of Progens .

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Progens was predominantly an agricultural village. During the 19th century, the area was dominated by the Semsales glassworks, which was located in the La Verrerie district. It ceased operations in 1914.

Even today, dairy farming , animal husbandry and, to a lesser extent, arable farming play an important role in the income structure of the population. Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in wood processing companies. In recent decades, Progens has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the regions of Bulle , Châtel-Saint-Denis and Oron .

traffic

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from La Verrerie to Saint-Martin . The next connection to the A12 motorway , which has been open from Bern to Vevey since 1981 , is around 7 km from the town center. On July 23, 1903, the railway line from Châtel-Saint-Denis to Bulle was put into operation with a stop at La Verrerie (on the parish of Semsales). Progens itself has no direct connection to the public transport network.

history

The Progens area was inhabited as early as Roman times. The first written mentions of the place as Progin come from 1324 and 1355; the place name is derived from a Roman gentile name * Probius with the suffix -ānum , which was common in southern Gaul and Italy to designate an estate after the owner.

In the Middle Ages the lords of Oron and the castles of Rue owned estates and lands in the Progens area. In the 14th century the village came to the Counts of Gruyères by inheritance . After the last Count of Gruyères went bankrupt in 1554, Progens passed into the possession of Freiburg in 1555 and was subsequently assigned to the Vogtei Rue .

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to what was then the Rue district during the Helvetic and the following period, before being incorporated into the Veveyse district in 1848. With the construction of the glassworks at the end of the 18th century, the area experienced economic prosperity, especially during the 19th century. At that time, the Semsales glassworks was one of the most important glass manufacturers in Switzerland. Progens belonged to the parish of Saint-Martin until 1888, after which it became an independent parish.

As part of the community mergers promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, Progens' voters in September 2003 voted with a yes majority of 90% for the merger of their community with Grattavache and Le Crêt . With effect from January 1, 2004, the municipality of La Verrerie was created , which was named after the former glassworks.
