Granges (Veveyse) ( Freiburger Patois ) is a municipality in the district of Veveyse (German: Vivisbach district) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland .

Granges (Veveyse) lies at 753 m above sea level. M. , 7 km north of Vevey (air line). The village extends in a promising location on a promontory on the northern edge of the ridge of Mont Pèlerin , west of the valley of the Biorde, in the extreme southwest of the Freiburg Central Plateau .
The area of the 4.5 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse heights in the catchment area of the upper Broye . The area is limited to the west by the Corbéron stream and to the east by that of the Biorde . Both waters flow through wide valleys and unite at the northernmost point of the municipality in the Pré de Sales valley , only to flow into the Broye just 1 km further north. Geographically, this area already belongs to the Haute-Broye valley. Between Corberon and Biorde the ridge of Mont Pelerin on which the charges Mont Chesau with 965 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Granges (Veveyse) is reached. Its north-western slope is densely forested ( Comba Losanna ), while the eastern slope is mainly made up of meadows. In 1997, 10% of the municipal area was settled, 19% forest and woodland, 70% agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
Granges (Veveyse) has numerous individual farms scattered across the area. Neighboring communities of Granges (Veveyse) are Bossonnens and Attalens in the canton of Friborg and Chardonne , Puidoux and Oron in the canton of Vaud .

With 880 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Granges (Veveyse) is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Friborg. 92.5% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.7% German-speaking and 1.6% speak English (as of 2000). The population of Granges (Veveyse) was 282 in 1850 and 331 in 1900. After the population had risen to 374 people by 1950, a clear decrease of 20% to 299 inhabitants was registered by 1970. Since then, there has been a marked increase in population combined with a doubling of the population within 30 years.
economy
Granges (Veveyse) was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Today, livestock and dairy farming are of little importance in the income structure of the population. Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. The most important employer in the village is Sokymat SA, founded in 1964, which manufactures RFID transponders. In Granges (Veveyse) there are also various small businesses such as carpenters and mechanical workshops. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Vevey-Montreux and Lausanne regions.

The community is located off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from Attalens , Bossonnens and Palézieux . The railway line from Lausanne to Friborg crosses the municipality, but has no stop here; The nearest train station is the Palézieux-Gare junction. On April 29, 1901, the narrow-gauge railway line from Palézieux-Gare to Châtel-Saint-Denis was opened. The Granges (Veveyse) stop is on the eastern side of the Biorde in the Bossonnens area. The Transports publics Fribourgeois bus route , which runs from Palézieux-Gare via Granges (Veveyse) to Attalens, ensures that the public transport is finely distributed .
history
The municipality of Granges (Veveyse) was probably already settled in Roman times, as it was on the trade route from Aventicum (Avenches) to Vevey. Graves from the Merovingian era have been found at the Beauregard farm .
The first written mention of the place took place in 1155 under the name Borcardus de Grangiis . The area has been under the rule of Bossonnen since the Middle Ages . In 1134, the gentlemen left the Sâles estate to the newly founded Haut-Crêt Abbey . This maintained an own farm in Sâles, a so-called grangie, from which the current place name is derived.
In 1536 Granges (Veveyse) came under the rule of Freiburg and was assigned to the Vogtei Bossonnens. From 1615 the village belonged to the bailiwick of Attalens. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Granges (Veveyse) belonged to what was then the district of Châtel-Saint-Denis during the Helvetic and the following period, before being incorporated into the district of Veveyse in 1848.
Attractions
Granges (Veveyse) belongs to the parish of Attalens. The Saint-Nicolas chapel was only built from 1933 to 1935 and replaced an earlier church that had been destroyed in the 19th century. The oldest building in the village is in Sâles and dates from 1508, another building in this courtyard is from 1730.
