Puidoux is a municipality in the Lavaux-Oron district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

Puidoux is 663  m above sea level. M. , 12 km east of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance). The village extends in the valley of the Forestay stream, in a wide hollow between the Mont de Gourze in the west and the Mont Pèlerin in the east, northeast of Lake Geneva , in the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 22.9 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Lavaux on the north-eastern shore of Lake Geneva (around 2.5 km of the lakeshore line) and the heights adjoining to the north. In the southern part of the municipality, the steepest slopes of Lavaux with an average incline of around 40 ° between the wine-growing villages of Epesses and Rivaz belong to Puidoux. This steep slope is separated by the height of Le Signal ( 660  m above sea level ) from the Plaine du Verney , a broad valley of the Forestay , in which the settlement and industrial area of ​​Puidoux is located. With 2880 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Puidoux is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 83.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.7% Portuguese-speaking and 3.7% German-speaking (as of 2000). The Puidoux wine region is called Dézaley ; the white wines produced here (from Chasselas ) are among the top products of Lavaux. A law has been protecting the vineyard from new buildings since 1949. Numerous other jobs are available in the secondary and especially in the service sector. The commercial and industrial area of ​​Puidoux is located on the Plaine du Verney and was created in the 1970s after the motorway opened. Puidoux has had an equestrian center (Les Chaux) and a golf course (east of Lac de Bret) since 1973. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1036 under the name Poistdor . Later the names Poidoux (1134), Poysdor (1140), Poidor and Poydoux (1141), Poydors (1142), Podoir (1154), Posdor (1171), Pouedour (in the 12th century), Postdor (1200), Poydu , Poedour (1274) and Posdors around 1710 . The place name is derived from the patois expression poyet (hill, height).

Puidoux belonged to the Bishop of Lausanne since the Middle Ages . He had the Tour de Marsens observation post and a castle built in the vineyards in the 12th and 13th centuries , but the remains of these have disappeared. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Puidoux came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Lavaux district. Until 1810 Puidoux was part of the large parish of Saint-Saphorin and only then became a politically independent parish.

Attractions

The chapel Saint-Nicolas in the hamlet of Vers la Chapelle, which is listed as a historical monument, dates back to the 11th century. It was enlarged in 1746 and later restored several times.

In the midst of the Dézaley vineyards is the crenellated Tour de Marsens, which was built around 1160 on the instructions of the then Lausanne bishop and for a long time served as an observation and signal post.
