Until the beginning of the 20th century, Chexbres was mainly an agricultural village. Even today, viticulture on the perfectly sunny slopes of the Lavaux (around 25 hectares) as well as arable farming and cattle breeding on the plateaus have a certain role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and especially in the service sector. In addition to everyday goods, Chexbres' business is mainly geared towards tourism. There are also several wine shops. The wine produced in Chexbres has the appellation Saint-Saphorin. Chexbres has a heated swimming pool. With the construction of numerous single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work mainly in Lausanne and the Vevey - Montreux region.

traffic

The community has excellent transport connections. It is on the main road from Vevey to Moudon . The Chexbres motorway junction on the A9 (Lausanne- Sion ), opened in 1974 and which crosses the municipality, is around 1 km from the town center.

On May 2, 1904, the railway line from Vevey to Puidoux was put into operation with a station in Chexbres. Today the Train des vignes runs on this route . The Puidoux-Chexbres train station on the main line from Lausanne to Bern (inaugurated on September 4, 1862) is just outside the municipality. A bus line takes care of the fine distribution in public transport, which operates the route from Cully via Chexbres to the Puidoux-Chexbres train station.

The municipality of Chexbres was already settled in Roman times, which can be proven by individual wall remains and coin finds. The first written mention of the place took place in 1079 under the name Carbarissa . In the following time numerous other names appeared: Chibriacum (around 1100), Chabris (1134), Chabre (1142), Cabarissa (1145), Cerbre (1147), Chebra (1165), Chabrii (1179), Chabres (1221), Chaibri (1248), Chaibry (1368), Chebry (1453), Cheibri (1454) and until 1562 both Chaybres and Cheybres . The origin of the place name is not clearly established. It could be derived from the Roman personal name Cabrius , from the Gallic Caebre (place on a hill) or from Cabus (hemp).

The area around Chexbres belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice since the 6th century and came to the Kingdom of Burgundy in 978 . In 1079 King Henry IV donated the village and its surrounding area to the Bishop of Lausanne. The interests of the bishop were represented by the Kastlan of Saint-Saphorin.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Chexbres came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Lavaux district. Until 1810 Chexbres was part of the large parish of Saint-Saphorin and only then became a politically independent parish. Thanks to its beautiful location, the village developed into a resort during the 19th century.

Attractions

Chexbres Church was built in 1888 on the site of an earlier chapel. It has a neo-Gothic tower, remarkable stained glass by Jean Prahin (1988) and a French Romantic organ from 1905. De Crousaz Castle was built in the 15th century. The current building, however, comes from a reconstruction after a fire shortly after 1600. The Maison Wyttenbach dates from the 18th century. In the old town center, some characteristic farm and wine-growing houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.

Personalities

Theodor Ahrenberg
  • The Swedish art patron and collector Theodor Ahrenberg (1912–1989) settled with his family in 1962 in the villa "Le Rocher" in Saint-Saphorin , where he continued his collecting activities. He maintained contacts with numerous up- and-coming young artists of the later modern age and invited them to work in his villa for several months. In this way, a comprehensive collection, the Ahrenberg Collection, was created over the next 25 years.
  • Chexbres also gained fame through numerous landscape paintings by the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918), which always have the south-facing slopes of Lavaux and the dominant Lake Geneva as their motifs. The most famous of these pictures is "Lake Geneva from Chexbres", which was created in 1911 and is in the public art collection, Basel.
