The Sionge is a 16.4 km long left tributary of Sarine (French Sarine ) in the canton of Friborg of Switzerland . It drains a section of the pre-alpine area in the Gruyère region and belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine . The catchment area of the Sionge has an area of 45 km². The Sionge is mentioned for the first time in 1355 as Sionsy and Syonsi . The names Sionse (1381) and Sionzys (1508) appeared later . The name goes back to the Gallic Segonna , which is made up of the word seg (o) - (force) and the suffix -onna (watercourse).

The Sionge rises in the Creux des Enfers basin at around 1360 m above sea level. M. on the north slope of Les Alpettes in the municipality of Semsales . First, the stream flows northwards down the steep forest slope of Les Alpettes and after 2.5 km it reaches the Molasse plateau on the edge of the Alps. Here the Sionge turns to the east-northeast and uses a wide valley basin, with the gradient usually between one and two percent.

To the east of Vaulruz , the Sionge enters the Bulle basin (Gruyère region), which is bordered in the north by the Gibloux ridge . Here it receives an inflow from the Diron and Russon tributaries, which also arise on the northern slopes of the Alpettes . In the Bulle basin, the Sionge draws a slight curve and now flows northeast. Today it flows into the Lac de la Gruyère reservoir below the village of Vuippens . Due to the damming of the lake, about 1.5 km of the Sionge valley, which is slightly deepened in the lower reaches, was flooded, so that a longer branch of the lake was created here. When the water level is low, the Gérignoz , which rises on the Gibloux hills , flows into the Sionge, otherwise it flows directly into the Lac de la Gruyère.

The course of the Sionge stream is now only characterized by a few sections left in a natural or near-natural state. In the relatively densely populated basins of Bulle and Vaulruz, the watercourse has been channeled and partially straightened. The Sionge is characterized by a nivopluvial runoff regime .
