The Gruyère , French Lac de la Gruyère , is a Swiss artificial lake , which in the canton of Friborg between cities Bulle and Friborg is. With a length of 13.5 km, it is the longest storage lake and at the same time the third largest reservoir in Switzerland in terms of storage volume . In the lake is the island Île d'Ogoz .
history
The Rossens arch dam , built under the direction of Henri Gicot , was completed in 1948. The preparatory work for the construction of the wall began in 1944. In 1945 the construction site was set up. Between 1946 and 1947, up to a thousand workers were employed on the construction site. The final construction price was 72 million Swiss francs (60 million francs were estimated).
Origin of the name
The Freiburg newspaper La Liberté carried out a survey for this purpose. 1447 replies were sent;

- 478 Lac de la Gruyere
- 434 Lac d'Ogoz
The most frequently mentioned proposal referred to the name of the stone arch bridge from 1544 over the Saane ( French: Pont de Thusy ), which was flooded by the lake. On July 6, 1948, the Council of State decided on the name Lac de la Gruyère .
On May 15, 1948, the flooding of the lake began, which was filled on September 20. The inauguration ceremony took place on October 14, 1948.
