The area of the 4.1 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating high plateau of the Gros de Vaud, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The area is traversed by the talent in numerous turns from east to west. The river has created a wide depression and gradually sinks into the molasse layers of the plateau below Saint-Barthélemy . In the southeast, the communal soil extends into the valley of the Mortigue , a left side stream of the Talent, and in the northeast into the Bois du Mont forest . The plateau in the area of Saint-Barthélemy has only very small differences in relief and is on average at an altitude of 590  m above sea level. M. The highest point is 613  m above sea level. M. reached on the castle hill. In 1997, 7% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 12% for forests and woodlands and 81% for agriculture.

The hamlet of Bretigny ( 596  m above sea level ) on the southern side of the Talent and some individual farms belong to Saint-Barthélemy . Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Barthélemy are Echallens in the east, Assens in the southeast , Bioley-Orjulaz in the south, Bettens in the southwest, Oulens-sous-Echallens in the west and Goumoëns in the north .

population

With 781 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Saint-Barthélemy is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 94.3% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.5% German-speaking and 1.0% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Saint-Barthélemy was 262 in 1900. Since 1980 (344 inhabitants) there has been a significant increase in population, with the number of inhabitants almost doubling within 20 years.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Saint-Barthélemy was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, agriculture and fruit growing have a certain importance in the income structure of the population. There are other jobs in local small businesses and especially in the service sector. Most of the jobs are offered by the curative education center located in the castle. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Echallens and the greater Lausanne area .

traffic

The community is well developed in terms of traffic, although it is located away from major thoroughfares on a connecting road from Echallens to Bettens . The La Sarraz motorway junction on the A1 (Lausanne-Yverdon) opened in 1981 is around 5 km from the town center. A Postbus course that runs from Echallens to Chavornay connects Saint-Barthélemy to the public transport network.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1097 under the name castrum Gomoens ; In 1228 the name Gumuens li Chastez appeared . Since 1265 the current name, the origin of which goes back to the chapel, has been passed down as capellam sancti Bartholomei . For a long time in the 19th century the place was called Saint-Barthélemy-Bretigny.

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Barthélemy belonged to the Goumoen rule of the noble family of the same name, which was mentioned as early as the 11th century. This family had a castle built on the hill west of the village before 1100 and called it Goumoens-le-Châtel. A small settlement gradually developed around the castle. In the course of the 13th century, the non-contiguous domain was split into three parts. From then on, Goumoens-le-Châtel formed its own rule alongside Goumoens-la-Ville and Goumoens-le-Jux . After the aristocratic family died out at the beginning of the 15th century, there were numerous changes of ownership. The settlement had then taken the name Goumoens-Saint-Barthélemy and was only called Saint-Barthélemy since around 1500.

In connection with the Burgundian Wars , the Confederates destroyed the castle. In 1476 Saint-Barthélemy came to the Orbe-Echallens Bailiwick , which was under the common rule of Bern and Friborg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Echallens district.

Attractions

The first church in the parish was the St. Bartholomew Chapel from the 13th century, which was under the Romainmôtier monastery. In 1537, today's church was built on the site of the former chapel. It was used for a long time by both Catholics and Protestants. The new Catholic church in the Bretigny district was built in 1801 and redesigned in 1863.

The core of the castle dates back to the 12th century, but has undergone numerous changes and redesigns over the years and was affected by the Confederates in 1475 and in 1802 during the uprising of the Bourla-Papeys. A comprehensive restoration took place in 1877. A square and a polygonal tower are integrated into the massive palace structure. Today there is a curative education center in the castle and in the surrounding buildings (opened in 2000).
