Mauraz is a municipality in the Morges district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Mauraz is 625 m above sea level. M. , 12 km northwest of the district capital Morges (air line). The farming village extends on the Jura foot plateau, at the confluence of the Morand creek in the Veyron , in the Vaud Central Plateau .
The area of the municipality, which is just 0.5 km² in size, comprises a small section of the western edge zone of the Vaud Central Plateau. The community soil is bordered in the north by the Morand stream and in the south by the Veyron valley. The highest elevation is 662 m above sea level. M. on the plateau west of the village. In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 11% for forests and woodlands and 85% for agriculture.
Mauraz consists of a lower part of the village ( 625 m above sea level ) and an upper part of the village, which is called Sur le Crêt ( 642 m above sea level ). The neighboring communities of Mauraz are L'Isle , Pampigny and Montricher .
population
With 59 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Mauraz is the second smallest municipality in the canton of Vaud. 95.8% of the residents are French-speaking, 2.1% German-speaking and 2.1% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Mauraz was still 70 in 1900. Since around 1950 the population has fluctuated between 35 and 48 inhabitants.
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Mauraz was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Some other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector.
traffic
The community is located away from major thoroughfares. Road connections exist to L'Isle and Pampigny . Mauraz himself has no connection to the public transport network. The Mauraz stop on the narrow-gauge railway line from L'Isle to Apples on the Bière – Apples – Morges Railway, inaugurated on September 12, 1896, is located on the northern outskirts of Pampigny, around 2.5 km from the town center.
history
During the Middle Ages , Mauraz belonged to the Romainmôtier monastery , then it came to the rule of Montricher and formed a district of the municipality of Montricher. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Mauraz came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Morges . It only became an independent municipality in 1764. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Mauraz belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Cossonay district.
Attractions
Mauraz has a small chapel but belongs to the parish of L'Isle.
