Chavannes-le-Veyron is a municipality in the Morges district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Chavannes-le-Veyron is 610  m above sea level. M. , 11 km north of the district capital Morges (linear distance). The village extends on the Jura foot plateau , north of the Veyron valley , in the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 2.6 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating Vaud Central Plateau. From west to east, the area is traversed by the Veyron valley, which is slightly sunk into the plateau. South of the river, the municipality extends into the forest Bois de la Foule , in which at 634  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Chavannes-le-Veyron is reached. To the north, the area extends over the Chavannes plateau to the source of the Gèbre , a left tributary of the Veyron. In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 27% for forests and woodlands and 67% for agriculture.

Chavannes-le-Veyron includes the hamlet of La Côte ( 590  m above sea level ) south of the Veyron and that part of the hamlet of Saint-Denis on the left (north) side of the Veyron . Neighboring municipalities to Chavannes-le-Veyron are La Chaux (Cossonay) , Grancy , Pampigny , L'Isle and Cuarnens .

With 142 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Chavannes-le-Veyron is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 93.6% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.0% German-speaking and 1.6% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Chavannes-le-Veyron was 136 in 1850 and 162 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 86 by 1970, a slight increase has been observed since then.

economy

Chavannes-le-Veyron still makes a living today from agriculture , mainly from agriculture , cattle breeding and dairy farming . Outside of the primary sector there are hardly any jobs in the village. A sawmill and a forge operated on the Veyron until the 1960s. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in Cossonay and the greater Lausanne area.

Although the community is off the main thoroughfares, it is easy to get to from Cossonay . The village is connected to the public transport network through the Postbus course that runs from Cossonay to L'Isle .

history

A burial mound from the Hallstatt period was discovered near Chavannes-le-Veyron . The place name is derived from the vulgar Latin capanna ( hut , small courtyard ). The Lac de Joux Abbey ( L'Abbaye ) maintained a priory in Chavannes-le-Veyron. The village formed its own small lordship until 1798. From the Middle Ages to the 17th century here was the infirmary of Cossonay . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Morges . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Chavannes-le-Veyron belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Cossonay district.

Attractions

The church of Chavannes-le-Veyron was rebuilt in 1844 on the site of a dilapidated church from 1636.
