Chevilly ([ ʃəviji ], in the native Franco-Provençal dialect [ (a) ʦəvəˈji ] or [ (a) ʦəvəˈʎi ]) is a municipality in the Morges district of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Chevilly lies at 575 m above sea level. M. , 15 km north of the district capital Morges (linear distance). The clustered village extends on a slope sloping to the east, over the Veyron valley , in the Vaud Central Plateau .
The area of the municipal area of 3.9 km² covers a section of the gently undulating Vaud Central Plateau. The area is bordered in the east by the Veyron and in the northwest by the course of the Venoge . While the Veyron valley is relatively wide, the Venoge flows in a narrow valley deepened into the Jura foot plateau. On the plateau between the two valleys, the hallway is En Suit at 625 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Chevilly. To the south, the municipality extends to the Gèbre , a side stream of the Veyron. In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 19% for forests and woodlands and 75% for agriculture.
Chevilly owns a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities to Chevilly are La Chaux (Cossonay) , Moiry , Ferreyres , La Sarraz and Dizy .

With 314 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Chevilly is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 91.5% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.8% German-speaking and 1.0% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Chevilly was 295 in 1850, compared to 221 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 120 by 1970, a significant increase in population has been observed since then.
economy
Chevilly still lives from agriculture , mainly from agriculture , cattle breeding and dairy farming . Outside the primary sector there are only a few jobs in the village. A mill on the Veyron mentioned in the 16th century was in operation until 1952. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in La Sarraz and in the greater Lausanne area.

Although the community is off the beaten track, it is easy to get to from La Sarraz and Cossonay . Chevilly is not connected to the public transport network. The nearest train stations are in La Sarraz and Cossonay.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1540 under the name Chivillier . The place name probably goes back to a Roman named Cavilius . Chevilly has belonged to the La Sarraz dominion since the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Romainmôtier . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Chevilly belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Cossonay district.
Attractions
The Reformed Church of Chevilly dates from the 18th century and was restored in 1898. A memorial commemorates the painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre , who was born here.
