history

In ancient times, this route was part of a Roman military road between the cities of Augusta Raurica and Aventicum and the legionary camp of Vindonissa . In the Middle Ages it was part of the so-called north transversal through the Central Plateau. After 1740 the main streets of Berne on the French model became roads expanded, which should run as far as possible over the territory of the Canton of Bern. However, since this road ran through Solothurn, it was neglected in favor of Hauptstrasse 1 , which ran through Bern .

course

The road starts in Lowenberg / Galmiz near Murten in the canton of Friborg on the main road between 1 ins and Muhlenberg directly at the highway exit Murten the A1 .

The road runs through Kerzers , over Aarberg and Lyss . The Aare is crossed in Aarberg and then reached again in Büren an der Aare . The road runs from Büren directly along the Aare to Solothurn, where it joins main roads 5 and 12 . At Wiedlisbach near the A1 autobahn exit Wangen an der Aare , the road branches off again and crosses the Aare and the autobahn, while roads 5 and 12 continue to Oensingen and Olten . About Wangen an der Aare is Herzogenbuchsee reached where the road leads back to the main road 1 and ends.

The total length of this largely non-directional thoroughfare is around 68 kilometers.
