Hauptstrasse 12
The main road 12 is a main road in Switzerland .
This road leads from Vevey on Lake Geneva in Vaud to Basel on the Rhine . It crosses the Central Plateau .
The main road is only of secondary importance for motorized individual traffic, as transit traffic on the section Vevey to Bern mainly uses the A12 motorway , which also begins in Vevey. The A1 is used on the section between Bern and Basel and the A2 from the Härkingen interchange .
history
This road connects the capitals of cantons that have represented different denominational, political and economic interests since the Reformation. Since 1587 at the latest, all goods had to be unloaded and declared in Solothurn. Bernese merchants therefore tried to avoid transports through Solothurn territory.
Road construction in the 18th century
In the 18th century, road building was often the cause of diplomatic disputes between warring cantons. For example, from 1729 the Catholic canton of Solothurn built the Passwangstrasse from Balsthal towards France in order to bypass the territory of the Protestant canton of Basel and the salt tariffs imposed there. In response to the completion of this road, the canton of Basel lowered the salt tariffs and had Obere Hauensteinstrasse repaired in 1738–1744.
From 1740 the main streets of Berne on the French model became roads expanded. During the same period, the canton of Solothurn built Bernstrasse as the shortest connection between Solothurn and Bern.
In 1753, Bern and Friborg agreed to build a road between the two cantonal capitals that led via Neuenegg.
Modernization in the 19th century
In 1817 the canton of Solothurn passed a new road law that exempted the municipalities from the maintenance obligation. From then on, the canton took on the costs of building and maintaining the important cantonal roads. The Bernstrasse was rebuilt in 1827–1830, the road over the Oberer Hauenstein was rebuilt in 1830–1834 and the Solothurn – Olten – Aarau road was also rebuilt in the 1840s.
In 1830, the Liberals took power in the canton of Friborg and passed a new road law that provided for a significant increase in government spending. A large part of the road construction expenditure was used for the north-south road Freiburg - Bulle - Vevey. In 1852 the road from Bern via Thörishaus to Freiburg was rebuilt.
