The Swiss motorway 51 , also known as the airport motorway , runs in the canton of Zurich , Switzerland. From the Zurich Nord junction to the Kloten-Süd junction, the motorway is congruent with the national road 11. The remainder belongs to the Canton of Zurich.
In 1968/69 the expressway, known as the high-performance road (HLS), was built through the Bülacher Hardwald, next to the Glatt and through the Bülacher Allmend. Meanwhile developed as a four-lane motorway, it leads as a bypass of the city of Bülach from the north west around Bülach on the eastern edge of the Zurich-Kloten airport to the south, where it ended up to the turn of the century before the city of Kloten . This section has no hard shoulder , but it is signposted as a motorway with a maximum speed of 120 km / h. The merger with the airport motorway to Zurich eased the traffic jam at peak times. In order not to cut up the Swiss Army's Kloten arsenal, the merger was realized as a building construction. Training and work rooms for the weapons station are built under the new section of the motorway (called: AMITI).
Expansion to the Chrüzstrass roundabout
On average, 27,000 vehicles per day travel through the Hardwald on the 2.9 kilometer stretch between the end of the motorway north of Bülach and the Chrüzstrass roundabout (as of 2020). The canton of Zurich plans to expand the route into a mini-autobahn (four lanes without hard shoulder ) for 94.5 million Swiss francs and to make the Chrüzstrass roundabout more efficient. The roundabout will be lowered, the two middle lanes for traffic between Eglisau and Bülach, which makes up 60 percent of the volume, will be guided over the roundabout without crossing. The two outer tracks lead into the roundabout. The merger with the A50 ( Glattfelden bypass ) planned in the cantonal structure plan has not yet been implemented. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021. The construction time is around three years. The expansion is a prerequisite for the implementation of the planned bypass road from Eglisau with a new bridge over the Rhine.
