Since the Middle Ages Wanzwil was under the Kyburg manorial Herzogenbuchsee and shared their fate. In 1406 the village came under the rule of Bern and was assigned to the Landvogtei Wangen and in it the court place Herzogenbuchsee. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Wanzwil belonged to the district of Wangen during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Oberamt Wangen, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.
In 1866, the Wanzwil weekly society was set up in the village, a gathering of farmers from the area to draw the general public's attention to the poor state of agriculture at that time. As a direct result, the first agricultural training school in Switzerland was founded in Wanzwil in 1869. Wanzwil does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Herzogenbuchsee.
