history

New York-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell

The college was founded on April 14, 1898 with financial support from Oliver Hazard Payne. It opened in New York City because of the lack of space in Ithaca , where the main campus is located, to set up adequate clinical practice areas.

In 1927, with the help of a donation of $ 27 million from William Payne Whitney, the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic was built, which has become a symbol of Weill Cornell's efforts in the psychiatric field. In the same year the collaboration with the New York Hospital started. The hospital's nursing school was attached to the university in 1942, which then operated as the Cornell Nursing School until its closure in 1979.

In 1998, New York Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital (the teaching hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons) merged. The hospital is now called New York-Presbyterian Hospital . Unlike the hospitals, Cornell and Columbia University faculties remain independent and separate. All parts of the New York Presbyterian Hospital are part of one of the two colleges.

In addition, in 1998 the college, which received US $ 400 million through a fundraiser from Sanford I. Weill , was renamed Weill Medical College of Cornell University .

profile

Weill Medical Center as seen from Rockefeller University

Although it is similar in many points to other medical institutes, there are differences in some crucial points. The main teaching hospital is NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital which comprises two medical centers: NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Columbia University Medical Center.

In contrast to similar cases, this hospital merger has not only led to a reduction in administrative workload, but also to a strengthening of academic programs at both universities.

In addition to affiliation to the New York Presbyterian Hospital, there are various other affiliations to different hospitals.

Weill Cornell Medical College opened the first American medical school outside the United States. The Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar was inaugurated of 2004.
