The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases ( NIAID ) is a US research center . As one of 27 institutes, it is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which in turn are an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services .

tasks

The NIAID is responsible for research on infectious diseases , autoimmune diseases and allergies . Headquarters is in Bethesda, Maryland . Their laboratories are there and in a branch in Montana . The director is currently (2016) Anthony S. Fauci .

A research focus is on AIDS and vaccine research, and they are also responsible for taking action against the threat posed by biological weapons .

The NIAID also organizes the funding of university research, has three departments for its own (intramural) research (Division of Intramural Research, Vaccine Research Center, Division of Clinical Research) and offers three-year specialist training for medical professionals (allergy / immunology and infectious diseases).

Emergence

The NIAID was given its current name in 1955. Forerunners go back to the hygiene laboratory of the marine hospital on Staten Island , which was founded in 1887 under the direction of Joseph J. Kinyoun . In 1891 this moved to Washington, DC , in 1930 the National Institute of Health was established (from 1948 National Institutes of Health). In 1937 the Rocky Mountain Laboratory of the United States Public Health Service was affiliated.
