Jackson (formerly also Botilleas , Botilleas Spring , Bottileas , Bottle Spring or Botellas ) is a city and the administrative seat of Amador County in California , United States . In 2019 there were 4840 inhabitants (estimated), after 4651 in 2010.

Jackson lies at an altitude of 371 meters. The California State Route 49 and State Route 88 leading to the city. Sacramento is about 75 kilometers northwest, Stockton about 70 kilometers southwest.

history

The area was originally settled by Indians from the northern Sierra Nevada region . The city was founded in 1848 and named after Colonel Alden Jackson . In 1853 Jackson became the county seat of the newly formed Amador County. Before that, 1851-1852, the city was the seat of Calaveras County . This makes Jackson the only US city that was the seat of two counties at different times.

Gold was discovered at Jackson in the 1850s. The most famous mines were the Argonaut Mine and the Kennedy Mine . The exploitation of the mines stopped in 1942 because of the entry of the USA into World War II .
