The Metfone Cambodian League ( Khmer ការប្រកួត លី ក កំពូល កម្ពុជា ) is the top division in men's football of the Football Federation of Cambodia , the national football association of Cambodia .

history

A championship that was won by Municipalité de Phnom Penh is recorded as early as 1965 . A civil war looming in 1966 caused by the Vietnam War prevented further championships from being held. Even in the dictatorial democratic Kampuchea there was no league operation. From 1982 a football championship has been handed down again in the country now known as the People's Republic of Kampuchea ; In 2005, the Cambodia National Football League was launched, for which ten teams qualified. In 2007 the league was renamed the Premier League , from 2010 it will be called Metfone C-League .

The Metfone C-League currently comprises twelve clubs that compete against each other in a round-robin tournament with a return leg. The best four clubs then qualify for the play-offs , in which the Cambodian football champions are determined in the knockout system . The winner receives a starting place in the Mekong Club Championship, which has been held since 2014 . Boeung Ket Angkor reached the final of this tournament in 2015, but failed there with 0: 1 against the Thai representative Buriram United . The Cambodian football champions have also been allowed to take part in the AFC Cup since 2016, but the Football Federation of Cambodia did not register a participant in 2016 . For the AFC Cup 2017 , Phnom Penh Crown originally qualified as champions of the 2015 season, but was excluded from the AFC due to match- fixing and the winner of the 2016 season, Boeung Ket Angkor, moved up. After a decision by the CAS , Phnom Penh Crown was allowed to take part in this tournament and Cambodia had two participants in the tournament once. In the AFC Cup 2018 , only the soccer champions of Cambodia took part.

The season is held every calendar year and starts in February / March and ends in December. The two worst-placed teams at the end of the season are relegated to the Cambodian Second League .
