The Dialog Champions League (formerly also Sri Lanka Premier League , Kit Premier League and Dialog Premier League ) is the top division of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka , the national football association of Sri Lanka .

history

In British Ceylon , the name of the Sri Lankan colonized by Great Britain , football was developed by British military personnel from the Royal Air Force , Royal Navy , Royal Engineers and Royal Artillery, among others . The attempt to carry out football competitions on the island resulted in the establishment of the Colombo Association Football League on April 4, 1911. The first competition held was won by the Royal Artillery team , after which there was no further competition for nine years. In 1920 the competition was revived, restructured and was henceforth called the Colombo Football League . From 1922 on there was a match again, some of the oldest football clubs from Colombo already took part in this competition. Saunders SC won the league in 1932 and 1933. In Kandy from 1925, the Kandy Amateur Football League , later the Kandy District League , also held a regional football competition. The Sri Lanka FA Cup has been held since 1948 .

From 1985 the national soccer league was held. Initially under the name Colombo Football League , the name changed to Super League in 1988/89 , before the name Bristol League was handed down in 1991 at the latest . The mode of the tournament also changed from time to time, in the first season the tournament was played in a single track , in later seasons it was played in two groups, the best clubs of which met in a knockout system . For the 1999/2000 season it was renamed the Premier League . The exit modes also changed frequently in the 2000s and 2010s . After the league was renamed Kit Premier League in 2004, it was held in two groups ( segments ) from 2005/06 , the ten best clubs of the previous season qualified for segment A , the six remaining clubs of the previous season plus qualified for segment B two climbers. The best three teams from segment A and the best team from segment B then met in the knockout system to determine the football champion. For the 2007/08 season, segment A was played in two groups, the clubs from segment B were henceforth second-rate. After being renamed Dialog Premier League at short notice in 2008 , the league was renamed Dialog Champions League in 2009 . In 2010/11 and 2011/12 the competition was held on a single track again. In 2012/13 the Football Federation of Sri Lanka failed to host the Champions League ; instead, 20 clubs played in two groups for the 2013 season, with the four best teams in both groups qualifying for the knockout phase. 2014/15 was played again with 20 clubs, but this year in a group in a single round. In 2015/16 and 2016/17 there were again two groups, the top four of both groups qualified for the final round, which was also played in the round-robin tournament. For the 2017/18 season the game was played in a group again.
