The 1st Football League of the Football Association of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ( Korean 조선 민주주의 인민 공화국 ) is the top division in North Korean professional football. The first place qualified from 2014 to 2016 for the continental AFC President's Cup , from 2017 for the AFC Cup . Due to the embargoes against the North Korean government, international transfers of North Korean players playing in North Korea are very rare.

League system

In North Korea there are about 130 (men's) football clubs, which are divided into three classes: the upper class with about 15 teams, the second class with about 30 teams and the third class with about 80 teams.

Since 2010, the clubs of the first soccer league of the Football Association of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have met about six times a year for 3-4 weeks to determine the cup winner in a tournament (in which everyone competes against everyone else). Until then, the individual tournaments were played in a knockout system.

Qualification International Cup

The reigning champions of the 1st football league of the Football Association of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have automatically qualified for the AFC Presidents Cup that will take place in the following season since 2014 . The best cup result of a North Korean club was reaching the final of the sports group Rimyongsu 2014. This was also the first participation of a North Korean club in an international tournament.
