The AFC President's Cup ( interpreting. : AFC President's Cup) was after the AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup 's third largest Asian club football competition , which by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) organized and was first held of 2005.
The President's Cup was the third tier in the Asian team competition system, below the AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup. These three competitions were founded as a consequence of the Vision Asia action plan suggested by AFC President Mohamed bin Hammam , with which the aim was to respond to the very inconsistent development status of the national associations in Asia.
The qualification for the Asian continental competitions was different than in Europe, where theoretically every country has the chance to take part in the UEFA Champions League with at least one team (after qualifying) . In Asia, the 14 most mature soccer nations (among them the great powers Saudi Arabia , Japan , South Korea and Iran ) with up to four teams per nation make up the Champions League, the next countries ( soccer central powers ) compete with one to two each Representatives in the AFC Cup.
After all, the President's Cup was intended as a comparison for footballing developing countries that are financially and organizationally not up to a larger tournament. That is why the competition, to which eleven nations sent their champions, took place within a few days at a fixed location and not spread over the year with home and away games. Up to and including 2007, the tournament took place with eight, then with twelve teams. In 2015 the competition and its participants were integrated into the AFC Cup.
