Mohamed bin Hammam 2010

Mohamed bin Hammam ( Arabic محمد بن همام العبد الله, DMG Muḥammad b. Hammām al-ʿAbd Allah ; * May 8, 1949 in Doha ) is a Qatari businessman. He worked as an internationally known football official.

Life

Before Mohamed bin Hammam drew attention to himself as a football official, he had been managing director of his own corporate groups since 1976. From 1972 he was president of the Qatari club Al-Rayyan SC . He held this post until 1987. During this time bin Hammam was able to win the national championship with his club in 1976, 1978, 1982, 1984 and 1986. In 1977 and 1982 his team was also in the final of the Emir of Qatar Cup , but lost each time.

From 1979 to 1983 he headed the Qatari volleyball and table tennis associations as president.

Later, from 1992, bin Hammam was President of the Qatar Football Association and organized the 1995 World Junior Football Championship within six weeks . In 1996 he was elected a member of the FIFA Executive Committee. In 2009 he was re-elected for four years in office by the members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Bin Hammam is considered a close confidante of the Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Chalifa Al Thani , and is said to have made a significant contribution to the FIFA Executive Committee awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

Since 2002 he was president of the AFC; he was last re-elected in 2011. After he was suspended on charges of bribery, Zhang Jilong from China assumed the position in June 2011. His candidacy for the office of FIFA President as a challenger to the previously incumbent Sepp Blatter , announced in March 2011 , he withdrew three days before the election. In the 1998 and 2002 FIFA presidential elections, bin Hammam was still a strong proponent of Blatters and supported him in these election campaigns. From 2007 both distanced each other. Blatter no longer needed bin Hammam's help for a new election, and he also saw the then AFC chairman as a competitor.

At the end of May 2011, Mohamed Bin Hammam had to answer for allegations of bribery before the ethics committee of the world association. He was suspected of violating the FIFA Code of Ethics. He was temporarily suspended along with Jack Warner . They are said to have violated the FIFA Code of Ethics by trying to buy votes for bin Hammam's election as FIFA President at the Caribbean Football Union meeting.

FIFA suspended him for life on 23 July 2011 after two days of negotiations for corruption . However, the International Court of Justice lifted the lifelong ban on July 19, 2012 without declaring him innocent. FIFA then suspended him for a further 90 days and the FIFA Ethics Committee opened proceedings against him. On December 17, 2012, it was decided that he would be banned for life. Thereupon bin Hammam resigned from all his offices.
