The Ýokary League is the top division of the National Football Association of Turkmenistan and has been played since the country's independence in 1992.
history
In the league system of the Soviet Union , no club from Turkmenistan reached the first-class Wysschaja Liga , but Köpetdag Ashgabat was able to hold on to the second-rate Pervaya League for some seasons . After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen football association Türkmenistanyň Futbol Federasiýasy was founded in 1992 and organizes the Ýokary League , the highest national football league in the country, with 15 participating teams. In the following season the league was reduced to ten participants, this number was largely retained, but in some seasons it is also played with eleven or nine participants. At the beginning of the 1990s there were also playoffs after the championship round had ended. The staging of the season follows the annual cycle as before in the Soviet Union and runs from March to December. For the 1997/98 season, the European game cycle was switched to, but the old game cycle was returned to after two seasons.
The participating teams are currently competing against each other four times in the round-robin tournament . The club with the most points at the end of the season is the Turkmen soccer champion and thus qualifies for the AFC Cup . The runner-up is also qualified for this competition, but must already compete in the play-off round.
