The Lao Premier League is the top division in men's football of the Fédération Lao de Football , the national football association of Laos .

history

The top soccer league Laos has been played since 1990. The championships in 1993 and 1995 were played without the clubs from Vientiane , which were excluded in these seasons and who held their own championship in those years. In 1997 two championships took place. The league has been played in a single-track round- robin tournament since 2002 . Due to the preparations for the Southeast Asian Games 2009 , for which players from each club were nominated for the participating Laos U-23 national team, there was no game operation this season. Due to a betting scandal, nine teams withdrew from the league after the 2016 season. Since then, the Premier League has been played with eight participants.

The league is held every year, with the 2017 season starting in April and ending in July. The 2018 season started on February 24, 2018. The participating teams compete against each other in a round-robin tournament with a return game. The club with the best rankings at the end of the season is the Lao football champions and has qualified for the Mekong Club Championship since 2014 and for the AFC Cup since 2015 . In 2015 and 2016, the Laotian Football Association had two starting places in the AFC Cup, but since only Lao Toyota FC was licensed by the Asian Football Confederation , the second starting place was omitted. Due to match fixing in 2015 and 2016, Lao Toyota FC was excluded from the 2018 AFC Cup .
