Mr. Holmes is a British-American Drama and Sherlock Holmes pastiche , directed by Bill Condon from the year 2015 . At the center of the plot is the aging detective Sherlock Holmes , who retired to a rural life after completing his detective career. The film opened in selected British cinemas on June 19, 2015 and celebrated its German theatrical release on December 24, 2015.

action

The now 93-year-old master detective Sherlock Holmes has long since withdrawn from everyday business and lives in seclusion in his country house in Sussex in 1947 , together with his housekeeper Mrs. Munro and their son Roger. Holmes is increasingly suffering from dementia due to his advanced age. For example, it is difficult for him to reconstruct the details of his last case, which 30 years earlier had induced him to end his detective career.

The relationship between Holmes and his housekeeper Mrs. Munro turns out to be increasingly difficult, as Mrs. Munro is overwhelmed with caring for the cynical and increasingly frail Holmes and even plans to leave his household. At the same time, however, Holmes developed a paternal friendship with Mrs. Munro's son Roger, who impressed him with his curiosity and sharp mind. Holmes' hobby is beekeeping, and he teaches the boy who shares his interests gradually in the apiary , which is observed by Rogers Mother with suspicion.

At Roger's urging, Holmes can gradually recall the circumstances of his last fall; In flashbacks , the viewer learns that at that time, at the request of the husband, Holmes investigated the case of a young woman named Ann Kelmot, who had suffered two miscarriages and whose behavior was absolutely puzzling to him. Ann had gravestones erected for her unborn children. She began to visit the music teacher Madame Schirmer several times a week, first taking lessons in glass harmonica with her , but later the music lessons were just an alibi to get away from her husband and to be able to remember her deceased children in peace. The husband had no understanding of this. When Holmes pursued her, various indications suggested that Ann Kelmot was planning to murder her husband. However, Holmes found out that she planned to commit suicide and be buried next to her children's headstones. Holmes imagined a kindred spirit in Ann Kelmot and the two realized that they suffered the same feelings of loneliness and isolation since Holmes had returned after Watson's departure. The young woman's suggestion to escape this loneliness together was rejected by Holmes; he advised her to go back to her husband. Ann Kelmot then committed suicide by throwing herself in front of a train. Holmes blamed himself for the young woman's death and decided to retire from the detective business, while Watson reinterpreted the events to success in one of his partially fictional stories. For Holmes's sake, he changed the ending in his work and locked all objects that had to do with the case so that the detective was not repeatedly confronted with his feelings of guilt. Only years later (at the beginning of the film) does Holmes find the photo of Ann Kelmot, which prompts Holmes to recall the case. Roger later finds her glove, which Watson locked away, which brings back memories of the outcome of the case.

Mrs. Munro decides to leave the Sussex country house and takes a job in a Portsmouth hotel . Before they leave, Holmes finds the boy Roger, unconscious and full of insect bites, next to his apiaries; he and Mrs. Munro are in an uproar and very worried. Mrs. Munro accuses Holmes, who blames himself for the tragic end of another companion. By chance, Holmes later realizes that the stings did not come from his bees as suspected, but that Roger had come across a wasp's nest and the wasps attacked him when he wanted to protect the bees. Unlike in the book "A Slight Trick of the Mind" , which served as a model, Roger survived and while his condition gradually improves, Holmes comes to the conclusion that personal relationships and especially emotional ties with others are important in life. He promises Mrs. Munro that after his death she will inherit the country house if she stays with him with Roger.

At the end of the film , he wrote a letter to the Japanese, whom he visited in Hiroshima , his hometown of Hiroshima , in order to get hold of the supposedly memory-enhancing anise , in which he explained that his father had joined the British secret service on his recommendation and therefore was no longer allowed to keep in touch with his family. Apparently the Japanese had linked Holmes' visit with the hope of obtaining information about the whereabouts of his father, who had allegedly met Holmes in England years earlier, but Holmes protested at the time that he did not know the father. Holmes finally describes the letter as "his first foray into the world of fiction".

background

The central character of Sherlock Holmes is based on the novels by Arthur Conan Doyle . In September 2013 it was announced that Mitch Cullin's novel A Slight Trick of the Mind , published in 2005, would be implemented as a feature film. Bill Condon was hired to direct, while British stage actor Ian McKellen was hired for the title role. Laura Linney and Hattie Morahan joined the cast on May 7, 2014 . On July 9, 2014, it was announced that Hiroyuki Sanada would star in a supporting role. He plays an admirer of Holmes' work whom Holmes encounters on his trip to Hiroshima , Japan .

It is mentioned that Dr. Watson has partly laid out the stories of Sherlock Holmes and so typical attributes such as the deerstalker hat and the pipe are missing at Sherlock Holmes .

The filming took place within seven weeks between July 5, 2014 and August 22, 2014 in East Surrey and London .

Trivia

The story about the fall of Ann Kelmot, which is expanded in the film, is not one of the original stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. It is also not published as a pastiche by other authors.
