Dick Smith (makeup artist)
Richard Emerson "Dick" Smith (born June 26, 1922 in Larchmont , New York , † July 30, 2014 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American make- up artist for special effects .
Life
Dick Smith is considered a pioneer and innovator of the modern make-up craft and began working for American television as early as the 1940s, where he quickly assumed a managerial position and was able to secure the reputation of a highly talented and skilled craftsman. Numerous techniques and materials, some of which are still in use today, go back to his work. In 1964 he published a textbook titled Dick Smith's Do-It-Yourself Monster Make-up Handbook , which was a reference work for many years and influenced countless professional colleagues.
Smith is considered the founder of modern effect make-up and offered his own training in the USA. Among other things, his techniques for skin aging through foam latex parts (used for Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man , where he was the first to use multiple parts, Marlon Brando in The Godfather and Max von Sydow in The Exorcist ) and his for Taxi Driver developed a formulation (Dick Smith formula) for film blood , which consists of corn syrup , zinc oxide , red and yellow food coloring , surfactants (Kodak Photo-Flo) and water and has been in the special make-up industry since the early 1980s prevailed. Smith was one of the special guests at Monsterpalooza in October 2012.
Smith had been married to Jocelyn De Rosa since 1944, with whom he had two children.
