description

Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky have been updating the West Memphis Three case since the release of Paradise Lost 2: Revelations in 2000. The Damien Echols Defense hired some of the most renowned forensic scientists to collect DNA and other evidence since the negotiations in the Were no longer tested in 1994 in the hope of being able to reopen the process. Echols defense and supporters, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, revealed new details that emerged during the trial that led to the convictions against them. A key point is the jury's misconduct allegation, as the chairman of the jury discussed the case with every attorney during the Echols-Baldwin trial, including Misskelley's admission, even though it was not admitted as evidence. The forensic experts found DNA and a new witness who cast suspicion on Terry Hobbes, the stepfather of one of the murder victims. A hair found in the shackles of a victim matched him, he told several conflicting stories about his whereabouts during the time of the murders, and he had become violent towards his wife and possibly his stepson. While many believed he should be considered as a suspect, the West Memphis Police Department had only questioned him as a witness and did not see him as a suspect.

Appeals for a new trial based on the new evidence were denied by the judge of the original trial. However, the Arkansas Supreme Court overturned this ruling in November 2010 and scheduled a hearing of the evidence in December 2011 to determine whether the evidence was sufficient for a new trial. This brought new hope for the defense and their supporters to come to a fair trial. However, in August 2011, four months before the hearing, prosecutors and defense attorneys negotiated a pretext agreement that would allow the men to be released on condition that they plead guilty while maintaining their innocence could. They reluctantly accepted the agreement and were released from prison after 18 years and 78 days.

Originally it was assumed that this film would also end with three men imprisoned. The premiere on HBO was first scheduled for November 2011. The film's world premiere was announced for the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2011.

Due to its sudden release on August 19th, the filmmakers decided to delay the film for another two months to give the series a definitive ending and theatrical release, allowing it to qualify for Best Documentary at the 2012 Oscars . The interviews with the released West Memphis Three that appear in the recut version were filmed from the day after their release. The original version of the film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival, while the recut version premiered on October 10, 2011 at the New York Film Festival . The three men, accompanied by their families, lawyers and supporters, attended the event.

On January 24, 2012, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory was nominated for an Oscar 2012 in the category Best Documentary with four other documentaries .
