Joseph Cedar

Joseph Cedar ( Hebrew יוסף סידר; ) (Born August 31, 1968 in New York City , NY ) is an Israeli screenwriter and film director .

Life

Cedar was born in New York but grew up in Israel , where his parents immigrated in 1973. His father, Howard Cedar , is a professor of molecular biology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In Israel, Joseph Cedar studied philosophy and theater history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . He graduated from New York University . In 2001 he made his debut as a screenwriter and director with his award-winning feature film Time of Favor . Since his second feature film Campfire , which was Israel's official candidate for an Oscar nomination in 2005 , he has enjoyed a high reputation and is considered one of the most renowned Israeli film directors. In 2011, Cedar presented the intellectual comedy Hearat Shulayim , which earned him his first invitation to the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival , where he won the Screenplay Award. Hearat Shulayim was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012 .
