action

The entrepreneur Norman Oppenheimer leads a lonely life in New York in the shadow of power and money. Despite his advanced age, he uses every opportunity and connection to expand his social network with influential people, whom he doesn't actually know, and to improve his social status, because he still dreams of great success. As a self-proclaimed doer, he messes up his extensive network of friends and acquaintances. Oppenheimer always wears the same camel hair coat over his elegant black suit, a gray, flat cap and a pocket from which his telephone earplugs protrude. He is constantly walking the streets of Manhattan talking to all kinds of people. He often visits his confidante Rabbi Blumenthal in a synagogue, where he eats a herring cracker. Influential financier Arthur Taub points out Oppenheimer's visit by the ambitious Israeli deputy minister for industry, trade and labor to New York . To make a good impression on the young politician named Micha Eshel, Oppenheimer bought him a pair of very expensive shoes for 1,192 US dollars.

Three years later, Eshel becomes Israel's prime minister and Oppenheimer is his unofficial ambassador for New York Jews. This circumstance changes Oppenheimer's life more than he initially believes. With the powerful friend at his side and the respect that is shown to him everywhere, he plans his greatest coup, in which his nephew Philip Cohen and Rabbi Blumenthal are also involved. But his influence on Eshel also poses a variety of problems as people, especially New York Jews, expect a lot from him. Oppenheimer soon finds himself in the midst of an international, geopolitical crisis, which he is now trying to avert. As someone who plans his plans on cocktail napkins, Oppenheimer is unsuitable for international politics, and although he has become a kind of friend for Eshel, he feels increasingly annoyed by his daily calls.

Staff, cast and dubbing

Richard Gere plays the title role of Norman Oppenheimer in the film

It was directed by Joseph Cedar , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. It is his first English-language film. Cedar was born in New York , moved to Israel with his family at the age of six, and grew up in Jerusalem. Cedar attended Yeshiva High School and served as a paratrooper in the Israeli army. He studied philosophy and theater history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is a graduate of NYU Film School .

Richard Gere can be seen in the film in the title role of Norman Oppenheimer. On January 14, 2015, Charlotte Gainsbourg was confirmed in a role. She plays Alex in the movie. Lior Ashkenazi took on the role of politician and later Israeli Prime Minister Micha Eshel. It was Ashkenazi's first leading role in a major US film. On February 6, 2015, the engagement of Michael Sheen , Steve Buscemi and Josh Charles became known. Sheen took on the role of Oppenheimer's nephew Philip Cohen, and Buscemi plays Rabbi Blumenthal. Charles plays Arthur Taub in the film and, along with Hank Azaria , who played the roles of Srul Katz, is the only actor of Jewish faith in the film project. Dan Stevens could also be won over as actors for the role of Bill Kavish and Isaach de Bankolé , who has a cameo appearance in the role of Jacques in the film.

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and directed by Michael Bartel on behalf of Interopa Film GmbH in Berlin .

Movie title and inspiration

The film previously had the working title Oppenheimer Strategies and is said to have been inspired by the life of former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert . Leading actor Richard Gere knew and valued Olmert and was associated with him during various stages of the peace process during his tenure: “I certainly liked him as a person and felt that there is indeed an enormous hope and promise associated with him as Prime Minister. I've seen him in action and interacting with Palestinians. It worked. ”Gere said he knew how to make compromises. Since mid-February 2016, Olmert has been serving a 27-month prison sentence for corruption and influencing witnesses. At the beginning of 2017 he had made a petition for clemency, and President Reuven Rivlin had announced that the petition would be examined like any other petition.

Norman Oppenheimer is described in the film title as a "New York Fixer", a person who provides other people with contacts. Especially in a Jewish context, the director was thinking of the story of Bernard Malamud . With Norman's surname Oppenheimer, Cedar also paid tribute to the court factor Joseph Süß Oppenheimer , an influential banker of the 18th century who pulled the strings for the Württemberg Duke Karl Alexander in the background and fell victim to a judicial murder. Many court factors were Jews, just as Norman Oppenheimer in the film is a Jew living in the USA . Cedar's first suggestion for the film title was "The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a Jewish Macher," according to the director. In the film, Cedar visualized Manhattan as Oppenheimer's office, in which the maker builds a social network from his contacts and makes the most important business calls from his bathroom or from a Starbucks, even while he is on the phone, for example, with the Prime Minister of Israel.

Through his contact with the members of a successful elite, Norman promises that he will also make great fortunes himself. Gere said of his role, "We all know Norman. I don't think there's anyone on this planet who doesn't know Norman. He's the kind of guy who wants to help you, whether or not he can.

Equipment and costumes

Production designer Arad Sawat on the set of Norman

While the exterior shots of Lanvin's shoe shop , which Norman Oppenheimer visits in the film with Micha Eshel, were taken in front of a real shop in New York, the production designer Arad Sawat had built his own film set for the inside of the shop, in which the items of clothing and other accessories were replaced by a corresponding special lighting such as works of art, each in its own area, were staged.

Sawat had started his work with simple and minimalist architectural lines. The idea for the home of the Israeli Prime Minister was that it should be built like a fortress and that the walls would keep it away from public space. Cedar liked this concept and found it to be an elegant way to visually show the viewer how the Prime Minister felt and lived his life there.

The costumes are by Michelle Matland . In order to show Oppenheimer as a one-man army, who makes his contacts single-handedly on the street and makes frequent phone calls, in the film he wears a camel hair coat over an elegant black suit, a gray, flat cap and a bag from which his Telephone earplugs protrude.

Filming and film music

Filming began in New York on February 8, 2015, almost a month later than originally planned, and ended after 30 days of shooting. The film was shot half in New York and half in Jerusalem . In New York, recordings were made in downtown Manhattan and in Central Park in early March 2015 . Yaron Scharf acted as cameraman . Cedar shows the phone calls between Oppenheimer and Eshel in split screens .

The score was composed by Jun Miyake . In addition, a Mi Shebach arranged by Raymond Goldstein can be heard in the film . Cedar, who in the past was known for sophisticated humor and whose intellectual comedy Hearat Shulayim was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012 , has tried to incorporate humorous references in Norman , not just because Oppenheimer always wears the same clothes in the film but also by playing music that has a carnival aspect and drum rolls. Only when the musical circus elements fall silent in the film is something wrong in the protagonist's world. The soundtrack includes 29 pieces of music and was released for download by Varese Sarabande on May 26, 2017.

Friedman as US ambassador to Israel, who is a supporter of the Israeli settlement construction and who had also expressed doubts about the two-state solution .
