Beaufort ( Hebrew בופור) is an Israeli feature film from 2007. It was a competition entry at the Berlinale 2007 .

action

The film takes place in 2000 on the Beaufort fortress . In 1982 the Israeli army captured the mountain of the fortress in southern Lebanon during the Lebanon War and only withdrew from this fortress in 2000 after public protests. The film tells the story of the young soldiers who spend the last days on the mountain before they are withdrawn home. The commanding officer is Liraz, who is only 22 years old and tries to protect his equally young subordinates as best he can from enemy shelling by Hezbollah .

The first victim is the young mine defuser Ziv, whose uncle was killed when the mountain was conquered in 1982. The withdrawal seems to have already been politically decided. Due to protests by political groups within Israel like the "Four Mothers" mentioned in the film, the unit is forbidden to defend itself - this is to prevent further victims. Hezbollah is stepping up its shelling at the fortress to make the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers appear like the withdrawal of a defeated army. So there have been further senseless sacrifices among the young soldiers in the last few days, which further intensify the senselessness of their presence in Beaufort. Finally the order to trigger comes. The last act of Liraz and his soldiers is to blow up the fortress.

Reviews

  • Harald Jähner ( Berliner Zeitung ): “… 'Beaufort' has something extremely gripping, but also limited, in the exclusivity with which the camera shares the perspective of the military defensive. The film has the ambition to be understood as a parable about the war itself, especially since it is set in the centuries-old fort, the walls of which should calm the fears of so many different warring parties in history. But a film in which the soldiers are only shot at, never shoot themselves, cannot be the whole truth. "
  • Elmar Krekeler ( Berliner Morgenpost ): “'Beaufort' is not a heroic epic, but rather a precise, not at all kitschy lament. About a seemingly insoluble conflict that makes such nonsensical undertakings possible, perhaps even necessary, about fathers who couldn't protect their sons. About a country that burns its children. In the end, Beaufort blows up. The boys take off their armor. You survived. Not more. The killing continues. "
  • Moritz Reininghaus ( Jüdische Zeitung ): “In the end, Cedar costs the demolition of the defenses in their power of images, then the soldiers return to the“ security ”behind the border fences, call their mum for the first time in the morning sunshine and are now but just happy that their existence as living targets has come to a halfway happy end. «Beaufort» is not a film about the war, just a film against the war. "
