from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fuji ( Japanese フ ジ , * 1970; † November 1, 2014 ) was the name of a female dolphin in the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium , which was the first of its kind to receive an artificial tail fin in 2004 .

Due to an unexplained accident 2 years earlier (2002) which caused necrosis , the bottlenose dolphin lost 75% of its caudal fin . He was nursed back to life in Okinawa's Churaumi Aquarium and given a replacement for his lost body part. The replacement is made of silicone rubber, weighs 2.2 kg, 70 cm wide and 25 cm long.

The artificial fin caused costs of about ten million yen (80,000 euros, as of January 2003) and was from the tire manufacturer Bridgestone provided free of charge.

Fuji died of liver damage in 2014.
