Danfung Dennis is a photojournalist , war correspondent and documentary filmmaker .

Danfung Dennis is the child of Minfong Ho , a Sino-US writer, and John Value Dennis, Jr., a US soil scientist . In 2004 he graduated from Cornell University in Applied Economics and Business Management. He began working as a freelance photojournalist for the Associated Press office in Beijing. Dennis worked as a freelance photojournalist in the Afghan war since 2006 . In 2007 he spent a total of six months in the Iraq war . His photos have been published in magazines and newspapers such as Newsweek , TIME , The New York Times , The Washington Post , The Guardian , Der Spiegel and The Wall Street Journal .

He spent four weeks in July 2009 with the US Marines Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment as an accredited photojournalist for the New York Times. This resulted in Dennis' first documentary Hell and Back Again . The switch from photojournalism arose out of a “frustration” with photojournalism, which led Dennis to use cinematic means to “wake up” people to the topic of the war in Afghanistan. For his documentary he won the Jury Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and the “Silver St. George” at the 2011 Moscow International Film Festival . In addition, on January 24, 2012, the film was nominated for an Oscar in the “ Best Documentary ” category.

In September 2010 Dennis founded Condition ONE . This developed an app for the iPad in which 360 ° video recordings can be viewed interactively.
