action

The year 1977 in Ireland: Damien Lynch is reluctant to be an altar boy in his congregation, but his censer swing , which brought down Father Hanley at mass, was just an accident. Damien's father is outraged and gives the boy a comprehensive three-month football ban. This hits Damien hard, as his favorite club, Liverpool FC, are currently in the final of the European Cup .

In the small town, the archbishop is expected to attend a Sunday mass. One acolyte has failed because he turned out to be unbaptized, so that only Damien can be considered as a replacement. Even though Father Hanley opposes it, the ward will have to fall back on him. Damien's father makes it clear to him that Sunday mass is his chance to prove himself - if the mass goes well, he can watch the European Cup final on television. Before the mass, Father O'Toole motivates the acolytes like in a football booth before the game and Damien also hears the people singing in the stadium as he speaks. The mass went on without incident, but Father Lynch silently made it clear to his son during the Archbishop's closing remarks that it was “not over yet”. When the acolytes and the archbishop leave the altar, Damien remains behind. He sets the censer down and waits for the archbishop to turn to face him. With start-up he kicks the censer as the penalty in the direction of the archbishop, who shocked the arms pulls up.
