Albert Nobbs is a 2011 Irish-British drama film starring Glenn Close and directed by Rodrigo García . The film is based on a short story by George Moore .

action

Albert Nobbs works as a butler at Mrs. Baker's hotel in 19th century Dublin. Behind the facade of the introverted, hard-working and thrifty man is in reality a woman who sees her only chance in changing roles to survive without a family and a husband. When she has to share her bed with the house painter Hubert Page for one night, she thinks her masquerade is in danger, until it turns out that Page is also a woman. Albert's courtship for Helen Dawes, with whom he wants to start his own business and be married, is complicated by the arrival of Joe, who wants to emigrate to America with Helen.

Reviews

"Stylishly staged historical drama that illuminates the gender issue from different angles and grants its protagonists an ambivalent attitude."

“Albert Nobbs” is, if you only look at the names, a film from the best family. István Szabó, who was originally to direct the film, wrote the story, and Irish writer John Banville wrote the screenplay with Glenn Close. And Rodrigo García is the son of Gabriel García Márquez. If great cinema were a question of parentage, a masterpiece should have been created here. So one can comfort oneself with the prospect that Glenn Close has her dream role behind her now, like Nicole Kidman with a wrong nose in “The Hours”. The game continues. "

Awards

The film was nominated in three categories at the 2012 Academy Awards:

At the 2012 Golden Globe Awards , the film was nominated for Best Actress (Glenn Close), Best Supporting Actress (Janet McTeer) and Best Movie ( Lay Your Head Down ), but couldn't win any of the awards. Glenn Close was named Best Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival 2011. Albert Nobbs received an audience award at the homochrom film festival in Cologne and Dortmund in 2012.
