James Greene (born May 19, 1931 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is a British film and theater actor and radio play speaker , whose career includes over 100 roles in international cinema, television films and television series. Including productions such as Der Mondschimmel , Was Mädchen Want , Whole Lotta Sole or Albert Nobbs .

life and career

James Greene, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1931, was a familiar face in English arts theater productions in the early 1950s . So he played there in a number of plays. Since the mid-1950s he starred in Peter Brooks' star cast of the RSC production of "Titus Andronicus," which made a brief European tour in 1957 and featured actors such as Laurence Olivier , Anthony Quayle and Vivien Leigh .

A change of direction brought him back to Belfast in 1959, where he worked as an announcer at UTV between 1959 and 1965. In 1965 he decided to resurrect his acting career and returned to England to earn a living in regional theaters.

In 1972 James Greene made his entry into television with a small role as an adjutant in the TV series Colditz . In the 1970s followed numerous roles as a supporting actor in British series, before he got the role of Professor Purwell in Dorothea Brookings' television miniseries The Moon Mold in 1978 . Sarah Sutton , Caroline Goodall , David Haig and John Abineri played at his side . In 1984 he was one of the regular cast of the television series Chocky with his appearances as Mr. Trimble . From 1985 to 1986 he played the Reverend Bartlet in the comedic series Mapp and Lucia .

1987 saw Greene in Steven Spielberg's drama The Empire of the Sun for the first time in a movie. He got his second feature film role in Michael Hastings' Oscar-nominated production Tom & Viv in 1994 . In the two-part police drama Second Sight in 1999 with Clive Owen , he played the optician Dr. Goddard.

In 1993 he read Odysseus alongside Sinéad Cusack , Stephen Rea , Norman Rodway and others in a dramatic radio play version of Homer's epic The Odyssey, broadcast by BBC Radio . This reading lasted 5 hours and 50 minutes.

From 2000 on, he continued to work in film and television. He played roles in well-known films such as the Johnny Depp film From Hell (2001) or in Dennie Gordon's comedy Was Girls Want (2003). In the same year he was also featured in Johnny English - The Spy Who Broken It and Sin Eater - The Soul of Evil . On television, he played Arnold in the comedy drama series William and Mary between 2003 and 2005 .

He got other cinema roles in 2007 in director Tyler Ford's film Piccadilly Cowboy . Director Guy Ritchie cast him in 2008 in his thriller RocknRolla and in 2009 in his crime comedy Sherlock Holmes . In 2011 he got the role of Patrick in Rodrigo García's Oscar-nominated drama Albert Nobbs, with Glenn Close in the lead role. In 2012 he starred in Tom Hooper's musical drama Les Misérables .
