occupation

Warrior is an American athlete - drama from the year 2011 . The film, highly acclaimed by international critics, tells the story of two mixed martial arts athletes and mutually hating brothers who, for different reasons, play a tournament and meet their conflicts in the final.

action

Ex- Marine Tommy Conlon is hiding under the maiden name of his mother Riordan in Pittsburgh . After more than 14 years he visits his hated father Paddy Conlon and lets his anger run free by reproaching him about his bad life and the death of his mother. But Paddy has not touched alcohol for almost 1000 days, is sober and only wants reconciliation with his son. Tommy does not want to know anything about it and looks for a sports studio where he competes as a sparring partner for mixed martial arts fighter and world championship contender Pete "Mad Dog" Grimes during training . The fight doesn't last long, because after a brief exchange of blows, Mad Dog is knocked out . The spectacular fight not only reaches his troops in Iraq via YouTube , but Grimes manager Colt Boyd also senses the big money and asks Tommy to take part in the Sparta Grand Prix tournament for him . Tommy agrees and lets his father train him, even though he's not completely reconciled with him. He promises the widow of his best friend and deceased comrade Manny the possible profit sum of 5 million US dollars.

Tommy's brother Brendan, the former UFC fighter and physics teacher at a school, also needs money. With his daughter's heart ailment and the overvalued mortgage on his home, Brendan is on the verge of foreclosure . To prevent this from happening within the next 90 days, he and his wife Tess take every part-time job they can get. However, there is not enough money up front and back, which is why Brendan takes part in a smaller MMA tournament and wins $ 500 with bruises and minor injuries. In return, he gets into trouble with his wife Tess, who fears for his salvation, and with the school council, who suspends him for the rest of the school year without pay. Now, if he doesn't want to lose his home, Brendan is forced to take part in such sporting events. He asks his old friend Frank Campana to train him. After the accident of another athlete, who is also trained by Frank Campana, Brendan persuades him and can take part in Sparta in his place .

The Sparta tournament is a Grand Prix tournament in which 16 fighters fight a maximum of four fights for two days in a knockout round system and fight for 5 million US dollars and the world middleweight title. The tournament will be accompanied by a great media spectacle. So Tommy quickly became popular, as not only the YouTube clip with Grimes, but also another video clip in which he blows up a sinking truck and saves drowning soldiers, becomes known. Because of his withdrawn, introverted and silent manner, there is much speculation about him. In contrast, the aging Brendan counts as an absolute underdog, who should probably be defeated quickly in the first round against Midnight Lee. And so it happens that Lee beats Brendan and almost knocks him out before Brendan succeeds in victory by giving up with a daring maneuver, the Kimura lever . Tommy, on the other hand, easily knocked out both Barbosa in the first round and Santana in the second round. It seems to be a personal satisfaction to him in the third round when he again takes on Mad Dog Grimes, who insults him furiously and not only knocks him out, but also beats him wildly afterwards. Brendan, on the other hand, has to do with the Russian over-fighter Koba after he also just survived the second round. The first two rounds Koba beats Brendan like a sandbag, so that Brendan cannot land a single blow. Only in the third round does he manage to score sporadically. He starts several attacks with the Kimura lever and after individual actions manages with the last of his strength to force Koba to give up.

The story of why Tommy deserted becomes known. He, his best friend Manny, and his entire unit were under self-fire in the hail of bombs from the United States Air Force . During his escape, he rescued a marine, who thanks him in a TV interview. Nevertheless, Tommy deserted and is now to be taken away by the military police after the fight and brought to a military tribunal.

Both brothers are now facing each other in the final. Brendan tried to contact Tommy before the tournament, but Tommy did not want forgiveness and furiously reproached Brendan for abandoning him and their mother for his friend Tess despite the father's absence. He blames Brendan for how his life went and how his mother died. It is this anger that drives Tommy to torture Brendan in the first two rounds in the constant fire of his punches. But Brendan can always free himself from Tommy's attacks and he also manages to use an omoplata lever in the third round . But as in all other fights before Tommy does not give up and lets his shoulder dislocate . Defeated and no longer able to fight, he still contests the last two rounds. Brendan feels sorry for him and dodges his angry attacks, but shortly before the end he forces Tommy to defeat, saying that there is no shame in giving up and that he loves him. Tommy gives up and both brothers leave the ring arm in arm. The father looks at them smiling and touched, the camera fades out.

criticism

"Although the film cannot escape the standard themes of a martial arts film, it is so skillfully made and the acting so convincingly real (Hardy is sensational) that when it ends in a cathartic victory, it surprisingly reaches you with compassion and honesty."

- Bruce Diones in the New Yorker

“The fascinating thing about Warrior is that there is no favorite. [...] This is one of the rare martial arts films in which you don't want any of the fighters to lose. That brings such complexity to the final showdown that it can hardly be topped. But it will, and Warrior deserves it. "

Warrior has surprisingly poetry and dexterity that, admittedly, is subtle. The director's impressive method - which also relies on the grace and discipline of his excellent, hard-working, actors - has only one goal in mind. This movie wants to knock you out. And he will make it. "
