action

The professionally successful Jane Nichols has already attended 27 weddings of her friends as a bridesmaid and organizer. In her own life, however, there is no man, but at the beginning of the film it becomes clear that she has been in love with her boss George for years. One evening when Jane commutes between two weddings, newspaper reporter Kevin becomes aware of her. What Jane does not know is that Kevin is writing the wedding column that she has been collecting for years and the author of which she dreams of being a fairytale romantic. However, since Kevin does not reveal himself as a romantic wedding reporter, but as a cynic , Jane lets him down .

When Jane's younger sister Tess returns from Europe and a relationship begins with George in front of Jane, she is supposed to be the bridesmaid and organizer. Jane continues to suppress her feelings for George and agrees to help her sister with the organization. Frustrated about this, she goes into Kevin's many advances and meets with him, who learns about her sister's planned wedding. Another problem is that Tess learns from her sister, among other things, that George loves hiking and is a vegetarian. Because then she pretends that she also likes to hike and doesn't eat meat, although that's not true.

Kevin calls Tess and promises to write an article about their wedding. In truth, however, his goal is to finally move up from the wedding desk to a higher position with the help of an article about the “eternal bridesmaid” Jane. He used the research on his article about Tess' wedding to collect material about Jane, for example during a personal interview with Jane, in which he also took photos of her in her 27 bridesmaid dresses. He also finds out that Jane has feelings for George and has suppressed them for a long time. He incites them to finally act and not just always be there for others. In the course of further wedding preparations and a car accident during a rainy night, Kevin and Jane spend an evening together in a bar. They get closer to each other during the exuberant partying and spend the night in the car, where both fall in love. At the same time, however, Kevin's article about Jane inadvertently appears in the wedding column. She feels exploited and breaks off contact with Kevin.

When Tess has her mother's wedding dress cut up, which affects Jane emotionally, Jane decides to stop acting altruistically and accuses her sister of sheer selfishness , followed by the fact that the relationship with George is based on lies. At the engagement party of Tess and George, Jane exposes her sister as a hypocrite in a slide show , whereupon George cancels the wedding. Kevin apologizes to Jane and is promoted because of his successful story. The sisters later make up, and George is also grateful to Jane for saving him from a rash wedding. She confesses to him that she has loved him for many years, but when they kiss together, they both realize that they were not made for each other. Rather, Jane admits that she really loves the cynic Kevin. She visits him at another wedding where Kevin was the last time a wedding reporter. She confesses her love to him and the two become a couple.

A year later, Jane and Kevin get married, and at the wedding George and Tess are reconciled. All 27 married friends of Jane in the appropriate dresses act as bridesmaids.

Reviews

Joe Leydon wrote in Variety magazine on Jan. 2, 2008 that the romantic comedy was "funny and formulaic" and "pleasantly predictable". She is the first "star vehicle" for Katherine Heigl, who seems engaging.

Michael Rechtsshaffen wrote in The Hollywood Reporter magazine that the "uninspired" romantic comedy borrowed numerous elements from other films and recycle feelings and empty attitudes. Rechtshaffen only praised the “terrific” Katherine Heigl, who seems to be loved by the camera and who can expect a promising film career. However, there is no chemistry between Heigl and Marsden.

"Conventional romantic comedy, set in a fairytale world of girls in which humor and understandable feelings are in short supply."

“Compared to Katherine Heigl's surprise hit. The first time this colorful bridal bouquet is quite conservative. But sweet. [...] About as original as a wedding dress in white. But you can't resist Katherine Heigl's charm. "

“This is good material that, unfortunately, is told far too superficially. Maybe the producers should have watched a few episodes of Grey's Anatomy - a little more drama and emotional seriousness would definitely have done the comedy good. On the other hand, the makers wanted to have 27 Dresses exactly as they are: beautifully colorful, reasonably entertaining and without any after-effects. "

27 Dresses is one of those remarkable Hollywood romances that can do without a single original idea and still be very entertaining. This is less due to Anne Fletcher's sluggish direction or the slippery story of an eternal bridesmaid who, in pitiful desperation, is working to finally host her own wedding. The only thing that lifts the film out of mediocrity is the gorgeous leading actress Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy) , who impressively proves her star qualities here. "
