The Indians of Cleveland II (Original title: Major League II ) is an American comedy film directed by David S. Ward from 1994 . It is a sequel to the 1989 comedy The Cleveland Indians .

action

The Cleveland Indians baseball team starts the new season after surprisingly winning the final against the Yankees . However, the coach has to realize that many of his talents like Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn or Willie "Mays" Hayes have not coped with the rapid rise and the associated windfall. Instead of team spirit, only money and status symbols count. Jake Taylor is forced to hang up his glove and work as an assistant coach due to his broken knee joints.

In the meantime, the team has been bought by former player Dorn, who soon has to sell his best player, the arrogant Jack Parkman, for lack of money. In return, a Japanese swordsman is hired, who immediately takes on the crowd favorite Pedro Cerrano, who has since converted to Buddhism .

So the team loses game after game until Dorn sells the club back to the old owner, who now finally wants to see the players lose. As in the first part, the players fall into a defiant reaction, forget their differences among each other and start an unprecedented winning streak.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was an "avalanche of well-known formulas and clichés". The scriptwriters forgot to "put in jokes" that would make the film more bearable. The “flat” script is one of the worst of the year. The cut is also a serious problem; the parts were put together "without regard to the continuous tone".

“A comedic sports film that, despite its dialog wit and comedy, cannot hide its inadequate dramaturgical concept. Interesting at best for die-hard baseball fans in the unimaginative and lengthy series of games. "

The film also received strong criticism in the German dubbing version, both from critics and viewers. While Pedro Cerrano still has an accent in the first part that seems Latin American not least because of the 'rolling R', in the continuation he speaks with a strong Rhineland dialect, which ultimately reduces the great sympathy for this character to absurdity.
