The Love Guru (Original title: The Love Guru ) is an American comedy film from 2008 . Directed by Marco Schnabel , the screenplay was written by Mike Myers and Graham Gordy .

action

The American Maurice Pitka grew up in India , where he was raised by clergymen. He returns to the USA as an adult and works there as a guru. He is assigned to mediate between the ice hockey player Darren Roanoke and his wife Prudence, because Darren has cheated because he was afraid of losing the Stanley Cup (in depth psychological terms, the fear of failure of his mother and, subsequently, of his wife). Sad about Darren's cheating, Prudence has embarked on an adventure with the opposing team's ice hockey goalkeeper. The reconciliation of Prudence and Darren is intended to restore the sporting success of the Toronto Maple Leafs team , of which Roanoke is a member.

Pitka meets Jane Bullard, who owns the team, and falls in love with her. However, as he received a chastity belt from his teacher, he rejects Bullard. In the end, Pitka reconciles Roanoke with his wife and even with his mother. The Leafs win the Stanley Cup against the Los Angeles Kings .

criticism

The film was largely panned by the critics. The film was rated 14% on Rotten Tomatoes : of a total of 167 reviews, only 23 came to a positive rating. In summary, it says on the page: " The Love Guru brings too many disgust gags and too few laughs and is therefore one of Mike Myers' weakest projects."

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of June 19, 2008 that Myers had made some funny films, but that “immature young people” could have written them on toilet walls (“Myers has made some funny movies, but this film could have been written on toilet walls by callow adolescents "). It contains numerous penis allusions that are not necessarily funny - contrary to Myers' apparent imagination. Even the supporting actors looked like they suspected that no one was laughing.

Brian Lowry wrote in Variety magazine on June 18, 2008 that the film was "relentlessly childish." He offers "fecal jokes" and "stupid songs". The character of Guru Pitka appears as if he was taken from the television program Saturday Night Live . The plot is full of holes and only plays a subordinate role compared to the gags ("The porous plot, actually, is all secondary to the shtick"). The critic praised supporting actors Justin Timberlake and John Oliver; Jessica Alba has little to do.

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was not original; Myers as a guru appears "as old-fashioned as his glued-on beard". The film makes his "future as a comedian appear more questionable than ever". The editors summarize that the “trite puns and the one-dimensional actors” would “make this gag revue difficult to bear”.

The lexicon of international films described The Love Guru as "an enigmatic comedy full of pop cultural allusions and quotes that knowledgeably target the esoteric business" and burn off a "considerable entertainment fireworks".

background

Mike Myers said in an interview for MTV that he began preparations to produce this film after learning of George Harrison's death . On the same day, he received a letter from Harrison - the last one the musician had ever written. This moved him to make a film about spiritual subjects.

The film was shot in Toronto and a few other locations in Ontario . Its production amounted to an estimated 62 million US dollars . The soundtrack was recorded in Burbank in May 2008 .

The film opened in US cinemas on June 20, 2008. The German theatrical release followed on October 2, 2008. The film grossed around 40.5 million US dollars worldwide, including around 32.2 million US dollars in US cinemas.

Award

The film was nominated for seven Golden Raspberries and in February 2009 received the awards for "Worst Film", "Worst Actor" (Mike Myers) and "Worst Screenplay".

Parodies

In Disaster Movie , the wedding in the last scene was designed in the style of Love Guru. The guru there was portrayed by John Di Domenico .
