The International Military Tribunal for the Far East ( English Tokyo Trial ) is a four-part miniseries Japanese public broadcaster NHK , with the Canadian production company Don Carmody Television and the Dutch FATT Productions. It depicts the events of the Tokyo trials from the point of view of the judges involved. The series was first broadcast in Japan on December 12, 2016 on NHK, while Netflix streamed the series outside of Japan on December 13, 2016.

action

After Japan surrendered in 1946, the victorious powers appointed the Tokyo tribunal to judge the Japanese war criminals. Australian Judge William Webb is appointed Chairman of the Tribunal by the Allied Commander in Chief in Japan, General MacArthur . Eight judges from friendly states are at his side: Myron C. Cramer (United States United States), van Michyevich Zaryanov (Soviet Union), William Donald Patrick (United Kingdom), Henri Bernard (France), Bernard VA Röling (Netherlands) ), Mei Ru'ao (Republic of China), Harvey Northcroft (New Zealand) and Edward Stuart McDougall (Canada). A short time later, the judges Radhabinod Pal (India) and Delfin Jaranilla (Philippines) join them. When they first meet, they vow to present the world with a fair trial and to judge according to current law (international law).

While most judges agree on most of the charges and the fact of the Japanese war crimes, some doubts about the legality of the laws applied are growing. Were the laws applicable to convicting Japanese war criminals active at the time of the crime - or is it victorious justice ? Röling and Pal in particular want to raise the process, which is important for history, to a legally credible and comprehensible level. But the other judges want a quick end to the trial with results comparable to those of the Nuremberg trials in post-war Germany. Tensions arise between fellow judges who dragged on over the two-and-a-half-year trial. When the verdict is announced, seven of the 28 accused are sentenced to death.
