Bernard Victor Aloysius (Bert) Röling (born December 26, 1906 in 's-Hertogenbosch , † March 16, 1985 in Groningen ) was a Dutch legal scholar .

Life

Röling studied law at the universities of Nijmegen , Marburg and Utrecht and received his doctorate in 1933 with a thesis on De wetgeving tegen de zogenaamde beroeps- en gewoontemisdadigers which from the University of Groningen was awarded a prize for Doctor juris . He then worked as a private lecturer at the University of Utrecht , where he was involved in founding the Criminological Institute.

In 1946 he was appointed judge at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and began to deal with the area of international law . Then he was a member of the Dutch delegation to the United Nations , where he caused a sensation with his constant representation of minor opinions.

In 1949 Röling was appointed professor for criminal law and criminology at the University of Groningen, where he worked until his retirement in 1976. He specialized in the area of international criminal law and was therefore given a lectureship in international law in 1957. In 1962 Röling founded the Institute for Peace Research at the University of Groningen. He opposed both nuclear weapons and American intervention in the Vietnam War .

The Röling Chair at the University of Groningen is named after Bert Röling and held by numerous prominent international lawyers, including Antonio Cassese , Manfred Lachs , Erik Suy and Michael Bothe . From 1963 he was a member of the Institut de Droit international .

His son Matthijs Röling made a name for himself as an artist.
