Billions is an American television series with Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti in the lead roles. The series premiered on January 17, 2016 on Showtime . The episode had previously been published online: on Showtime's own platform Showtime-on-demand and on Youtube , but there in a censored version. On January 21, 2016 it was announced that Sky PLC had secured the broadcast rights to the series under a new contract with CBS Studios for the markets of the United Kingdom , Ireland , Germany , Austria and Italy . The German-language broadcast has been on the pay-TV channel Sky Atlantic since April 25, 2016 . The series is based in part on the action of real New York prosecutors Eliot Spitzer and Preet Bharara .
After the second episode was broadcast, the broadcaster Showtime decided to extend the series for a second season. At the beginning of March 2017, Billions was extended by a third season, at the end of April 2018 by a fourth season. In May 2019, the series was extended by a fifth season, which began broadcasting on May 3, 2020.

The series is set in the New York financial world on Wall Street and covers a. a. the investigation of the United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti) against the successful but also unscrupulous hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Lewis).

The media magazine dwdl.de expressed itself as follows: “The pilot of the PayTV series Billions , an exciting Wall Street thriller u. a. with Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti, enthused almost all visitors, although due to the complex ongoing story hardly any free TV station in Germany would want to show it.
