Preet Bharara (2009)

Preetinder Singh "Preet" Bharara ( Panjabi ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ 'ਪ੍ਰੀਤ' ਭਰਾਰਾ ; * 1968 in Firozpur , India ) is an Indian-American lawyer and public prosecutor. He was the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017 .

Professional career

Bharara graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1990 and from Columbia Law School in 1993 , where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review .

In 2009 he was nominated as a prosecutor by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate. Whenever there is a change of government, it is customary for political officials to be replaced as soon as a replacement is found. Under Donald Trump, however, 46 of 93 US federal prosecutors were asked to resign immediately in mid-March 2017, including Bharara, although Trump asked him to stay after his election victory in November of the previous year. Professional prosecutors should take over their duties until further notice. However, Bharara refused, with the support of Republican politicians, to resign and was subsequently dismissed by the Attorney General . According to a report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , although it is common for civil servants appointed by the previous president not to renew their contracts, dismissals as in this case and in this way are rather rare.

Bharara was responsible in his office for the New York boroughs Bronx , Manhattan and others adjacent to them; his agency prosecuted numerous international terrorists such as B. the " Times Square bomber" Faisal Shazad .

His brother, Vinit Bharara, is the founder of Diapers.com , a subsidiary of Amazon.com .

Since autumn 2017, Bharara has been producing the podcast Stay Tuned together with the radio station NPR , in which he discusses political and legal topics alone or usually with a guest.
