Dean G. Skelos (born February 16, 1948 in Rockville Center , Nassau County , New York ) is an American politician . In 2008 he was acting lieutenant governor of New York State .

Career

Dean Skelos studied history at Washington College in Maryland until 1970 . After studying law at Fordham University , he was admitted to the bar in 1975. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1982 and 1984 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He has been a member of the State Senate since 1985 . Between 1995 and 2008 he was Republican vice chairman.

After the resignation of Joseph Bruno as parliamentary group chairman and acting president of the Senate, Skelos took over his offices on June 24, 2008. This was also associated with the role of Acting Lieutenant Governor of New York State, which he held between June 24 and December 31, 2008. He was Deputy Governor David Paterson and formally chaired the State Senate. He headed the Republican parliamentary group in the New York Senate until 2015 when he resigned on corruption charges. In 2016 he was sentenced to five years in prison.
